Welcome (5 minutes)
- Peirce students and teachers will welcome and introduce the guest speakers.
- Depending on the number of speakers in the room, you can divide up the time for individual presentations.
- Students will start by asking specific questions about your job/college.
- Having something interactive to do with the students is encouraged.
We would like our students to come away with these understandings:
- Higher education is possible for everyone.
- Careers can take many different shapes; our career paths are not exactly what we plan for or expect.
- It is possible to combine skills or pursue interests in different ways.
- Certain skills or traits are essential to any job.
- Students can start to explore and prepare for their future careers now.
- Please wear what you would wear on a typical day in your profession. Students are expected to wear professional dress. This is an opportunity to discuss the dress codes of your profession.
- Feel free to use any props, hands-on activities, or computer presentations. Include requests for equipment when you register.
- See the “Suggestions for Planning Your Talk” page for more specific ideas.
- You will be presenting to students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades, ages 11-14.
- Most of our students are outgoing and friendly, but there are students who are shy or uncomfortable around adults.
- Think of something that will help the students warm-up and feel comfortable with you. This could be a personal story, a joke, or a short game.
- Do not take any contact information from our students. If you would like to send any further information to our students you may send it directly to the school.
