As teachers we can share our college and career experiences, but we want our students to get a broader picture of the different opportunities that exist. Many of our students are unaware of the college and career options that are available to them and they aren't sure how to reach those goals. The purpose of our College and Career Day is to have students meet with a wide range of professionals in different career fields to help them explore their interests and to create realistic plans of action.
We would like our students to come away with these understandings:
College and Career Day is part of the Spring Learning Celebration that takes place at the end of the quarter. Throughout the day students will attend four 64-minute sessions based on their own personal goals and interests. We are suggesting four formats to choose from for volunteer speakers to share their experiences with our students. All of the presentation options benefit our students. We want you to select a format that feels comfortable for you.
Option 1: Individual Speaker- College
Volunteers will be divided into rooms based on their college/higher education experience. In each room there will be 3 presenters who had different college experiences. Each presenter will speak for approximately twenty minutes about their college/university giving general facts/details about their college (Location, average GPA, average ACT, demographics, etc.) as well as sports, clubs, major events.
Option 2: Individual Speaker- Career
Volunteer speakers will be divided into rooms based on career fields. In each room there will be three professionals who have different jobs within the same career field. Each professional will speak for approximately twenty minutes about what the job entails, the education and experience necessary for the job, and his or her individual career path.
Option 3: Planned Pair
This option is for two to three speakers who want to plan a presentation together. We found that presenters who attended with friends or colleagues were able to plan ahead and to build off of each other’s experiences.
Option 4: Career-based Activity
In the Career-based Activity, presenters will present a hands-on activity that might give a sense of what is involved in this career. Activities depend on the creativity of the speaker and the nature of the job.
We will be running four sessions throughout the day. It would be fantastic if you could attend for the entire day, however we understand that you also have to work.
Breakfast 7:30-8:10
Session 1: 8:10-9:04
Session 2: 9:06-10:06
Session 3: 10:08-11:08
Session 4: 11:10- 12:10
Lunch: 12:10-1:10
Register here, or if you cannot attend, please consider sharing this information with other colleagues who may be interested in speaking at Career Day.
We would like our students to come away with these understandings:
- Higher education is an option for everyone.
- Careers can take many different shapes; our career paths are not exactly what we plan for or expect.
- It is possible to combine skills or pursue interests in different ways.
- Certain skills or traits are essential to any job.
- Students can start to explore and prepare for their future careers now.
